In the summer of 2020, April Richards and Gerri- Lynn Stevens, along with their little boys decided to fundraise for Ronald McDonald House Charities NL. They set a goal of riding their bikes 300kms and raising $500.
As their social media presence grew, so did the team and their goals. April and Gerri-Lynn were joined by 5 other mothers in Labrador who collectively rode 2054kms throughout June and July.
They raised over $16,000 for Ronald McDonald House Charities NL!
In 2021 Kilometers for Kids grew into a cross province cycling event, 7 cyclists and 5 support people travelled more than 1000 km over 8 days, July 9 – 16th 2021. Starting at the Northwest tip of Newfoundland, St. Barbe, cycling all the way to Ronald McDonald House in St. John’s.
Being from Labrador, this team understands how difficult the added challenge of distance is to a family with a sick child in Newfoundland and Labrador. They challenged themselves physically to go this distance to raise funds to keep families sick children together and near the medical care and resources they need at Ronald McDonald House.
The team travelled along the TCH, and stopped at a different location towards the end of each day to rest for the night and prepare for the upcoming ride.
They were met with support and encouragement all across the province. Meeting families who have stayed at RMHC NL, McDonalds operators, town councils and RMHC NL volunteers. They were welcomed with receptions in many towns and had an incredible time sharing the mission of Ronald McDonald House Charities NL.
This year they raised over $100, 000!!!!
